Biographical/Historical:     The Library and Historical Commission was created in 1963 by an act of the Legislature, which changed the name of the State Library Board, absorbed the Civil War Centennial Commmission and its members, and established the historical archives (Ch. 63-39, Laws). The Commission continued to administer the State Library and the newly created historical archives.  The State Librarian, the de facto Secretary of the State Library Board, continued to act in that capacity as the Secretary of the Library and Historical Commission, recording the activities of the Board.  Despite the name change, the public and the Commission continued to refer to the Commission as the State Library Board, and at times, the Civil War Centennial Commission.  The State Librarian was charged with keeping a record of the Commission, developing new libraries and improving existing ones.
Dorothy Dodd served as the acting State Librarian after the death of the first State Librarian, William T. Cash, in 1951.  She was appointed second State Librarian in 1952 and retired in 1965.
Summary:     This series consists of reports, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting programs and policies of Florida State Library during the term of State Librarian Dorothy Dodd. Records in this series document the duties of the State Librarian as administrator of the State Library and policies of the State Library Board.  In addition, this series documents the State Library's efforts to support local libraries in Florida, general administrative duties of the State Librarian, and her participation in State and National Library associations.  Box 3 of this series contains records relating to an article in the Library's newsletter on children's book selection that was criticzed in the press as an attempt to ban certain children's books and quickly developed into a nation-wide controversy.
