Biographical/Historical:
The Florida Association for Women in Education (FAWE) began in 1967 as the Florida Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors (FAWDAC) until its members voted to change the name during the annual business meeting in January 1992. Originally, Deans of Women staff members comprised the majority of the association. During the 1970s, membership faltered when institutions began phasing out the position of Dean of Women. As a result, in the mid-1970s, the organization extended its member base to other women professionals in higher education. From then until its dissolution in 2006, FAWE membership consisted of women in administration, counseling and individual development, activities and services, instruction, or research in higher education or related institutions.
The organization provided support for women in post-secondary education related positions in Florida through conferences, programs, services, twice-annual newsletters, and other networking activities such as an email listserv, workshops, and mentoring programs. The FAWE Board voted to dissolve the association in 2006.
