	Biographical/Historical:	The Apalachicola Range and Outer Light Station and Saint George Sound Turn Light Station were constructed near the Cape Saint George Lighthouse during the late nineteenth century and continued to guide ships until the mid-twentieth century. The light stations supported the lighthouse by guiding ships past the barrier island and toward the Cape Saint George lighthouse, which directed ships into the Apalachicola river. The Cape Saint George Lighthouse fell into the Gulf on October 21, 2005, after years of natural beach erosion and several strong hurricane seasons. Light Station keepers were originally employed by the office of Lighthouse Services under the United States Department of Commerce until the office became part of the United States Coast Guard on July 1, 1939.
	Summary:	This collection includes correspondence, reports, log books, and notes documenting the operation activities of light stations in the Apalachicola area, primarily the Apalachicola Range and Outer Light Station and the St. George Sound Turn Light Station. The collection contains routine reports created by the Department of Commerce Lighthouse Service and the United States Coast Guard for use by light station keepers. Correspondence includes letters and telegraphs between the district office in New Orleans and light station keepers regarding supplies, repairs, employment, and storm activity. Reports in this collection include, but are not limited to, monthly reports, time sheets, balance sheets, rules and regulations, service cards, instructions, notices, department circulars, light lists, inventory records, and bulletins.
