Biographical/Historical:     Dr. William Lee Wilbanks (1940-2018) earned his Ph.D. in criminal justice from the School of Criminal Justice, State University of New York at Albany in 1975, and he taught criminal justice at Florida International University in Miami from 1973 to 1999. Dr. Wilbanks authored numerous publications related to homicide in South Florida, among which are Murder in Miami: An Analysis of Homicide Patterns and Trends in Dade County (Miami) Florida, 1917-1983 (1984); Forgotten Heroes: Police Officers Killed in Coral Gables and South Miami, Florida, 1928-1994 (1995); and True Heroines: Police Women Killed in the Line of Duty Throughout the United States, 1916-1999 (2000).

Summary:     This collection consists primarily of photographs of Florida law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty that Dr. Wilbanks collected and used to illustrate his publications. Most of the images are grave markers and portraits. Also included in the collection are images of the Ku Klux Klan (provided to the donor by the daughter of a Miami offer who had a KKK funeral), Guiseppe Zangara (who attempted to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in Miami in 1933), and Miami Herold crime reporter Henry Reno (father of former Florida State Attorney and U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno).
