Biographical/Historical:     The Luten, Neal, Stanley, and related families lived in Georgia, Florida, and other Southern states during the 1860s and 1870s. At least one family member, John E. Luten (1832-1901), served in the Civil War with Company B of the 8th Florida Infantry.

Summary:     This collection contains papers and letters from the Luten family and related families. The majority of the letters are between various sisters, brothers, and nieces. While some of the letters do occasionally discuss the Civil War and national events, most are concerned with the health and illnesses of various family members, their education, and family businesses. The letters are difficult to read, and many are partially illegible. The letters have been transcribed, when possible, to make the information more accessible to researchers.

In addition to the letters, the collection contains items of interest such as a history of Cuthbert, Georgia, written by David Holman in 1884. The essay discusses the early history of Cuthbert and includes information on the first doctor in Cuthbert, the first lawyer, first merchants, and first judge. Also mentioned are the building of the court house and the first school. Other items of interest include an 1894 political announcement and a 1909 advertisement for an airship exhibition.
