Legislation in 1979 (79-322, SB 1208) transferred the Florida Folk Arts component of the Stephen Foster Memorial to the Florida Department of State. Operating as the Bureau of Florida Folklife Programs from ca. 1985 until 1995, the Bureau coordinated the annual Florida Folk Festival and directed such programs as Folk Arts Apprenticeships, Folk Arts in Education, Folk Heritage awards, annual research surveys and numerous other projects and programs. From 1995 through June 30, 2021, the renamed and reorganized Florida Folklife Program continued the majority of these operations from within the Division of Historical Resources, Bureau of Historic Preservation in Tallahassee. During the 1995 reorganization, the State Archives of Florida acquired the Florida Folklife Collection from the Bureau of Florida Folklife Programs’ previously maintained Florida Folklife Archives. Legislation in 2021 (2021-71, L. O. F., HB 909) transferred the Florida Folklife Program and its operations from the Division of Historical Resources to the newly renamed Division of Arts and Culture, previously the Division of Cultural Resources, effective July 1, 2021. The program is charged to "identify, research, interpret, and present Florida folk arts, artists, performers, folklore, traditions, customs, and cultural heritage and make folk cultural resources and folklife projects available throughout the state."
The exhibit "Pursuits and Pastimes: Florida Folklife in Work and Leisure" was part of a project to increase popular understanding of folklife and make relevant library resources available to the public. This project, "Florida Heritage: The Folklife of Work and Leisure," was conceived and conducted by the Department of State through the Division of Library Services and the Division of Archives, History, and Records Management, Florida FolklifeProgram and was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The initial plan was for the exhibit, which uses artifacts, photographs, and text to give attention to examples of folklife throughout the state, and a smaller replica version to travel to twenty-two library sites throughout Florida between April 1983 and April 1984. In addition, each of these sites was to present public programs that focused on the traditions of the local area. It was hoped that the exhibit and the programs would encourage local libraries to increase their involvement with the folk culture of their area and make people more aware of the library as a resource center for further investigation of local heritage. After the completion of this initial time period, the exhibit continued to circulate. Interested institutions could request the exhibit along with optional educational materials for a fee from the Bureau of Florida Folklife Programs.
Summary:
This series consists of information pertaining to the design and use of the "Pursuits and Pastimes: Florida Folklife In Work and Leisure" exhibition. There are inventories, shipping records, insurance records, requisitions, and correspondence relating to the use and transfer of the exhibition; photographs, budgets, designs, and instructions relating to its construction and assembly; and slides of the exhibition on display. Included in this series are volumes I and II of the Florida Folklife Directory, which are separate listings of resource materials (v.I) and people (v.II) for folklife in the state of Florida, as well as a catalog for the exhibition. There are also instructions for public programs on Folklife Identification, Maritime and Inland Waterways, and Music and Dance that were designed to coincide with the showing of the exhibit, and the audio tape of tour boat guide excerpts that was used in the exhibit.
