	Biographical/Historical:	David Greenway Raney and his wife moved to Apalachicola, Florida, in 1834. He served two terms as mayor of Apalachicola during the time that the city adopted its first ordinances. Three of his sons served with the Confederacy in the Civil War. His youngest son, George Pettus Raney won election to the state legislature in 1868 and served as the House Minority Leader. He also served as Attorney General and in 1888 was appointed as Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Virgina Raney Porter married into the Oven family of Tallahassee, Florida, and gave birth to William Oven. Virgina's husband, a priest, moved to Apalachicola in the 1820s and was the first Episcopal priest in the town. They both died from consumption and William Oven's aunt raised him in the Raney family home on Market Street in Apalachicola, Florida.
	Summary:	This collection contains correspondence, photographs, legal documents, diaries, and newspaper clippings of the Raney and Oven families of Apalachicola and Tallahassee, Florida. The papers document the lives of one of the first merchant families to live in Apalachicola. Photographs include images of several generations of Raney and Oven family members.
