Biographical/Historical:     The Beaches Public Hospital Special Taxing District was created in 1982 (Ch. 82-291) as a successor agency to the Duval County Beaches Public Hospital Board. The original Duval Board was established by the Legislature (Ch. 25807, Laws 1949) to provide services to “that part of Duval County… which lies south of the Saint Johns River and East of the East Coast Canal.” The Beaches Public Hospital Special Taxing District served the same area and was likewise empowered to purchase property; construct hospital buildings; operate, maintain and supervise hospitals; borrow money; issue bonds; call elections for the question of issuing bonds; and other such powers relating to raising money for and operating hospitals in the beaches area of Duval County. In 1994 (Ch. 94-434), the hospital facility was sold to the Baptist Medical Center of the Beaches, Inc., and the special taxing district was dissolved.

Summary:     This series contains the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors of the Beaches Public Hospital Special Taxing District and of the Baptist Medical Center of the Beaches. The board served both the taxing district and the medical center. Additionally, there are minutes of department staff meetings. There is a six year gap from 1976 to 1982.

This series also contains legal files from medical malpractice claims and civil lawsuits, as well as copies of case law from the Southern Reporter. Patient medical records contained within lawsuit records are restricted.
