Biographical/Historical:     Micanopy is one of the oldest towns in Florida. Located in Alachua County, the town was originally the site of Cuscowilla, a Seminole village. In 1774, naturalist William Bartram visited the town on his Florida travels. In 1817, the King of Spain granted the site to Don Fernando del la Maza Arredondo. Four years later, Florida became a United States territory and Edward Wanton established a trading post on the site, then known as Wanton. However, the area was usually referred to by the name "Micanope," the name of a Seminole leader (ca. 1785-1847). Eventually the town's name evolved to Micanopy. In 1983, the town's historic district was placed on the National Register for Historic Places.

Summary:     This collection consists of four photographs of Micanopy from the early 1900s. Two of the images are of a Memorial Day celebration: one image of the parade marching downtown on Smith Avenue, the other of the veterans gathered at a cemetery. The other two photographs are of two automobile service businesses in Micanopy. The photographs in this collection document the economic and social aspects of Micanopy as well as the architecture of the town.
