Biographical/Historical: |
Dr. Mark Frederick Boyd (1889-1968) was a prominent physician in the fields of public health, tropical medicine, and malaria. His career extended into public health service, teaching, and research. He was elected President of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and received awards for his research on tropical medicine and malaria. He did his studies on malaria in Brazil, Jamaica, Mississippi, Georgia, and North Carolina.
In 1931, Boyd moved to Tallahassee, Florida, and established a research laboratory. He worked at the Florida State Board of Health from 1947 to 1952. His work in tropical diseases, especially malaria, earned him the Brumpt Award in 1953. Boyd was also a historian of early Florida history and co-authored a book, "Here They Once Stood: The Tragic End of the Apalachee Missions," with Hale Smith and J.W. Griffin. Boyd's historical work focused on early Spanish settlements in Florida and the Native American population. He served as president of the Florida Historical Association and as historian of Florida National Parks.

Summary: |
This collection contains photographs of various Florida scenes that Mark Frederick Boyd collected. Most of the photographs are of Tallahassee by photographer Alvan S. Harper, who took the photos in March 1888 and include various downtown buildings, parks, and people. These photographs include good quality albumen prints of Black citizens. Other photographs include various Florida monuments, markers, and historical sites. The collection also includes a program for the 1924 Florida Centennial Celebration in Tallahassee and an 1898 travel book about Leon County history and agriculture, which states that Tallahassee African Americans are "meek and docile as his mule" and guarantees that "wives, daughters and sisters, are safe in Leon County, as in any other farming community." Photographs of Orlando, Key West, and Saint Augustine are also included in this collection.
