	Biographical/Historical:	Fort Barrancas was a military fortification located directly across from Santa Rosa Island in Escambia County, Florida. Spanish explorers built the first fortification on the site in 1722 as San Carlos de Barrancas and expanded it in 1797. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson rendered the fort useless when his men destroyed the fort's artillery. In 1840, a new fort was begun on the site -- Fort Barrancas. In 1862, Union forces captured the fort for the duration of the U.S. Civil War. In 1890, the fort was re-activated and used briefly during the Spanish-American War in 1900. From 1900 to 1930, the fort was used for military training and communications. In the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees were conditioned at the fort. In 1947, the fort was decommissioned, and in 1971 became an addition to the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Today, the fort is located within Pensacola's Naval Air Station.
	Summary:	This collection consists of photographs from Fort Barrancas and Jacksonville taken in the 1920s. The Fort Barrancas photographs comprise the bulk of the collection and include images of training, war games, airplane missions, the officers' barracks, drilling on the fort's parade grounds, the lighthouse, various artillery pieces, and several aerial images of the fort. These images document the activities, types of weapons and equipment used, and the architecture of the fort. The collection also contains several photos from nearby Pensacola, including many aerial shots of downtown, images depicting beach recreation, and several of the area's "rum runner," a small boat that brought illegal rum to the town. Finally, there are a few photographs of Jacksonville, showing a circus parade and Riverside park.
