Biographical/Historical:     Wekiwa Springs is located near Apopka in central Florida. A natural freshwater spring, Wekiwa Springs pumps out 42 million gallons of water per day, creating the Wekiva River. As with many Florida springs (e.g. White, Rainbow, and Silver Springs), Wekiwa Springs was a popular destination for wealthy tourists and health-seekers at the turn of the century. Often, hotels, sanatoriums, and other features were built near the springs. At Wekiwa, there was a hotel, dining hall, watchtower, and nature trails. As the spring's tourism slacked off in the 1920s, there was a failed attempt to develop the surrounding area. In the 1940s and 1950s, the area was used as a hunting camp. In the late 1960s, Wekiwa Springs was turned into a state park within the Florida Park Service.

Summary:     This collection consists of a blueprint map for a proposed development at Wekiwa Springs near Apopka, circa 1924, by the M.E. Miller Realty Corporation. The blueprint shows the various lots for sale, as well as the existing features at the spring, including a hotel, dining hall, bath house, and trail system. The blueprint map documents the development of the spring and surrounding area and provides information on the condition of the natural features as they existed in the 1920s.
