Biographical/Historical:     On the night on 17 September 1926, a category four hurricane struck downtown Miami. With sustained winds of over a 100 mph -- the first time such an occurrence had ever been recorded -- the storm caused millions of dollars in damage, ruining South Florida's crops as well as its real estate and tourism business, and killed over 400 residents. Most residents died as the eye passed through; ignorant that the storm was not yet finished, many ventured to assess the damage and were trapped without shelter. Over 55,000 Floridians were without electricity and another 40,000 were rendered homeless. In less than ten years, two more devastating hurricanes struck the same area in 1928 and 1935. At a time before named hurricanes, the 1926 hurricane was known as the "Great Miami Hurricane."

Before the 1926 hurricane, Miami was Florida's premier vacation spot for wealthy tourists. People from around the world came to Miami and surrounding areas such as Homestead and Miami Shores to enjoy the warm weather, frolic on the beach, and reside in posh hotels such as the Hotel Everglades and Hotel McAlister. Many hotel night clubs offered elaborate stage shows to attract potential lodgers and diners. Miami was also the epicenter of Florida's booming real estate trade.

Summary:     This collection consists of two sets of photographs of the Miami area in 1926, documenting life before and after the "Great Miami Hurricane." One set features five images of the Fountania, a Miami Shores nightclub that offered nightly music and shows, one photograph of the Miami Shores railroad depot, and one photograph of the local shopping center. The other set documents the damage of the 1926 hurricane to the Miami area, including the city docks, various hotels, and residences. These images document both the extravagance, architecture, and social life of the area in the 1920s as well as the destruction of the 1926 hurricane. Many of the photographs have hand-written descriptions on the reverse side.
