Biographical/Historical:     Between 18 and 21 September 1926, a major hurricane struck South Florida, destroying that year's citrus crops and ending the famed Florida land boom. In Miami, there were 113 deaths and over 800 hospitalizations. In August 1949, a "baby hurricane" with winds of 75 mph struck the west coast of Florida. It travelled north from Tampa to Cedar Key, then retraced its path back south. While there were only two reported deaths, structural damage and beach erosion were nevertheless severe for many Gulf communities.

Summary:     This collection consists of ten black and white photographs of hurricane damage in Clearwater (1926) and Tampa (1949). The images document the extent of damage caused by the storms as well as the type of buildings and areas affected.
