Biographical/Historical:     The battleship USS Florida was built at the New York Navy Yard. It was commissioned in 1911 in Pensacola and presented by Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist. For twenty years the ship served in the Atlantic and Caribbean. In 1914 the U.S. Navy used the ship in the landings at Veracruz, Mexico, and during World War I it operated in the North Sea with the British Grand Fleet. The Navy decommissioned the battleship at Philadelphia on February 16, 1931 and scrapped it under the terms of the London Naval Treaty of 1930.

    Sarah C. Shands, wife of Florida Senator William Augustine Shands, was present at the presentation ceremony in 1911 as a representative of the Martha Reid Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Summary:     This collection contains three photographs taken during Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist's speech at a ceremony for the USS Florida on December 18, 1911. The images depict the governor giving speaking from the balcony of the San Carlos Hotel in Pensacola, Florida, in front of a crowd of soldiers and civilians.
