Biographical/Historical:     The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola is a United States Navy base near Warrington, Florida, on the southern tip of Escambia County. Originally called Warrington Naval Yard, the base was a strategic location during the first years of the Civil War. From 1861 to 1862, Union and Confederate troops occupied nearby forts and vied for control of the naval base. Opposing forces reduced most of the facilities to rubble, although they were rebuilt after the Civil War.

In 1911, Congress passed the Naval Appropriation Act to provide resources for aeronautical development. In October 1913, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels appointed a board chaired by Captain Chambers to survey aeronautical needs and to establish a policy to guide future development. One of the board's recommendations was the establishment of an aviation training station in Pensacola. In 1914 the Navy expanded its role in Pensacola development by establishing the U.S. Naval Aeronautical Station. The air station grew quickly and by the end of World War I, seaplanes, dirigibles, and free kite balloons were housed in steel and wooden hangars stretching a mile down the air station beach.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs depicting various post-World War I aviation activities and development at the Naval Air Station Pensacola. Images include a balloon used for training, the construction of hangers, and an image of sinking of the USS Massachusetts for training purposes.
