Biographical/Historical:     St. Augustine, Florida, is the county seat of St. Johns County. Founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. In the late 19th century, Henry Flagler's East Coast Railway transformed St. Augustine into one of Florida's premier tourist attractions for wealthy vacationers. At about the same time, photographer W.J. Harris opened a studio in the late 1890s where he sold prints and postcards of the many photographs took of the city's landmarks.

Summary:     This collection contains 18 photographs of St. Augustine. Noted St. Augustine photographer W.J. Harris hand tinted two of the images: one of the Old City Gates and one of the Oldest School House. The other 16 photographs are black and white images of a variety of places throughout the city. Images depict the St. Francis Barracks after the fire in the early 1920s; the home guard of St. Johns County in front of the Old City Gates in 1918 (postcard photograph); aerial views of the waterfront from an unidentified high point; the Henry Flagler statue; a waterwheel; the furnace used to create "hot shot" at Fort San Marcos; boats on the waterfront; a canopied road; and the Alcazar Hotel and the Ponce De Leon Hotel. There are two interior photographs and two exterior photographs that could be at either of those two hotels: one of a breezeway and another of a couple at an entrance.
