Biographical/Historical:     Colonel Thomas Jefferson Appleyard (1850-1931) was a prominent journalist and printer in Tallahassee. His Appleyard Printing Plant, located on the corner of Monroe and Pensacola streets, handled most of the State of Florida's printing contracts during the 1910s and 1920s. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, and served as a colonel with the Confederate Navy in Virginia. He moved to Florida in 1882 to work for the Jacksonville Times. After creating and operating several Florida newspapers, Appleyard signed his first state printing contract in 1909. He was also involved in politics for the Democratic Party.

The 111th Ohio Volunteer Infantry captured the 4th Florida Infantry's flag at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864. In September 1927, several Ohio veterans returned the colors to Florida in a ceremony on the steps of the Florida State Capital. Present at the celebrations were Governor John Martin, Colonel T.J. Appleyard, and Secretary of State H. Clay Crawford. The celebration continued with the dedication of the Robert E. Lee Memorial in Bradfordville, Florida.

Summary:     The collection contains photographs of Colonel Thomas Jefferson Appleyard and his family, including images of Appleyard giving speeches at the dedication of the Robert E. Lee Memorial in Bradfordville and at the return of the 4th Florida Infantry's Confederate flag at the State Capital in 1927, Appleyard with his children at their residence in Tallahassee, and his printing plant. There is also a photograph of the L and N Railroad passenger depot in De Funiak Springs taken in 1911.
