Biographical/Historical:     Lieutenant Miller Walston (1898-1979) was born in Kentucky and later became City Engineer for Tallahassee, Florida, and a veteran of both World Wars. In 1929, Walston designed and constructed Dale Mabry Field, a former airport west of Tallahassee. He also worked with one of the Engineer Regiments that worked on the Claiborne and Polk Railroad between Camp Claiborne and Camp Polk in Louisiana. He spent most of his life in Tallahassee and collected photographs of events he attended and some of the various engineer projects that he completed while serving as the City Engineer for Tallahassee.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs of the construction of the Dale Mabry Field, residents of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority house, and the Florida Centennial Celebration in Tallahassee, Florida. Also included are three photographs of the exterior of the Old Florida Capitol, one photograph of Tallahassee city officials including Miller Walston, and two photographs of Walston in Europe as a soldier during World War II. Images also include the construction of an unidentified canal near Tallahassee and Black convict workers in South Georgia.

    The photographs of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, located on College Avenue near the Florida State College for Women's campus, contains images of the family that lived in the house and the sorority members in various activities. These photographs also include an image of a Black female domestic worker sweeping the steps of the sorority house. The photographs of the Florida Centennial Celebration parade in Tallahassee include images of various floats, including a Florida State "Capitol on Wheels," and depict various business and parade spectators along North Monroe Street in downtown Tallahassee.
