Biographical/Historical:     Ignatz Nathaniel Gardner (1871-1943) was a Jewish businessman who worked in Florida's shade tobacco industry. Born in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1871, Gardner immigrated to the United States in 1884. Prior to 1900, he moved to Quincy, Florida, from Minneapolis with the development of the shade tobacco industry. He served as president of Max Wedeles Tobacco Company from 1919 until his death in 1943. His home in Gadsden County, the Gardner-McCall House, is a historic landmark for its Spanish-style architecture that is unique in Quincy, but typical of Florida in the 1920s.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs of the Gardner and Wedeles family and the Taussic and Wedeles Tobacco companies of Gadsden County. Many of the images depict Black workers in various stages of tobacco production, and there are several group photographs of the companies' Black and white employees. Some images depict Black women sorting and grading tobacco. One image depicts a white man directing a group of Black men in packaging the tobacco. Also included are interior photographs of houses and offices, images of family fishing trips at Rocky Comfort Creek located near Lake Talquin, and various photographs of tobacco farms and factories.
