Biographical/Historical:     The Spanish-American War began when the U.S.S. Maine sank off the coast of Havana, Cuba, on January 25, 1898. The United States Congress quickly declared war against Spain, the nation that controlled Cuba at the time. The war was over within months, and by October, the U.S. and Spain were in Paris for peace negotiations. Tampa played a major role in the conflict as the staging ground for U.S. troops under the command of General William Shafter and General Joe Wheeler.

General William Shafter (1835-1906) was the commander of the 5th Army Corps, which led the invasion of Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. General Joe Wheeler (1836-1906) was the Major General of the American volunteer forces in the war, serving directly under General Shafter. David Franklin Kemp (1868-1957) served as a sergeant in the Ohio National Guard 3rd Ohio Volunteers, of Dayton, Ohio.

Summary:     This collection contains six photographs of Spanish-American War soldiers in Ybor City and Tampa. Subjects include three photos of the Ohio Volunteers in camp; two photos of General Joe Wheeler and General William Shafter along with their staff; and one photo of General Shafter at the Tampa Hotel.
