Biographical/Historical:     Raeburn C. Horne (1896-1962) of Madison, Florida, was a state politician and a member of the Pork Chop Gang, a group of rural North Florida legislators that operated between 1945 and 1965. Nicknamed by Tampa Tribune columnist James Clendinen in 1955, members of the Pork Chop Gang banded together to oppose civil rights and reapportionment legislation. Up to that time, most of Florida's political power rested in rural, segregated North Florida. By the 1960s, however, the Pork Chop Gang lost influence as South Florida grew in financial and population superiority, and as social attitudes shifted away from traditional segregationist views. The gang often met at Horne's Nuttall Rise fishing lodge along the Aucilla River in Taylor County.

Summary:     This collection contains two photographs. One is a group photo that shows Democratic state legislator Raeburn C. Horne along with other legislators (L-R: Senator Addison Drummond, Representative Bamberg Harrell, Senator Raeburn C. Horne, Representative L. C. Leedy, Governor Holland, and Representative Dan McCarty) in Governor Spessard Holland's office during a bill signing. The other photograph is of Raeburn Horne's Nuttall Rise Camp on the Aucilla River in Taylor County.
