Biographical/Historical:     In the late 1880s, Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia established St. Cloud sugarcane labor farm in northern Osceola County. After a failed attempt in the sugarcane industry, Disston died in 1896 and his land remained fallow until 1909 when the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Civil War union veterans, purchased St. Cloud and 35,000 surrounding acres to establish a retirement community for veterans. This gave it the nickname "The Friendly Soldier City."

In 1909, St. Cloud consisted of two houses, three tents, and twenty people. The first veterans to move to St. Cloud lived in tents loaned by the United States Army until houses could be built. In 1911, the Florida legislature incorporated St. Cloud as a city with a population of 2,000. It consisted of a post office, a water works, a telephone company, a bank, six churches (including the First Presbyterian Church), and 43 businesses. The economy of St. Cloud depended on the veteran pensions the citizens received each month, although the city's economy and population grew during the 1920s until the Great Depression of the 1930s when the population started to decline. The city then advertised for new citizens and offered homesites to soldiers of all wars.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs of citizens, buildings, and veterans in St. Cloud, Florida. The photographs depict veterans from the Spanish-American War and American Civil War and feature various buildings and businesses. In addition, this collection contains a 1911 program from the First Presbyterian Church of St. Cloud.
