The Division of Library and Information Services in the Florida Department of State provides library, records management, and archival services at the state and local level. The Division provides direct library services to state government; develops library services statewide; and provides archival and records management services, technical assistance, education, financial aid, and cooperative services. Working in partnership with archivists, librarians, records managers, governmental officials, and citizens, the Division seeks to assure access to materials and information of past, present, and future value to enable local libraries and agencies to provide effective information services for the benefit of the people of Florida. The Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) is a not-for-profit membership network of libraries and other information organizations within the Southeast and the Caribbean. Founded in 1973, SOLINET's mission is to aid its members in acquiring access to traditional and networked information resources. This can include education, trainings, consultation, and regional coordination. It is run by a 13-member Board of Directors who serve for three-year terms. SOLINET is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Barratt Wilkins began with the Division in 1973 as Assistant State Librarian of Florida. Four years later, Wilkins became Florida's State Librarian as well as the Division's director. Between June and October 1987, Wilkins also served as Acting Secretary of State. Wilkins served on SOLINET's Board of Directors between 1979 and 1982.. He was its treasurer in 1980-1981, and vice-chair in 1981-1982.
Summary:
This series documents the Division of Library and Information Services' use of SOLINET to acquire access to various information resources and improve its facilities, including access to electronic records, leasing and purchasing equipment, licenses for e-books and other databases, and coordinating agreements with other library systems. The series also documents SOLINET's participation in Florida's Electronic Resource Task Force. Maintained by Division director Barratt Wilkins, the records include newsletters, correspondence, electronic mail, meeting minutes, agreements, and committee notes. Also included are records from Wilkin's term as SOLNIET's treasurer and as a Board director.
