Biographical/Historical:     Alvan S. Harper was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1847. Between 1870 and 1884, he was a professional photographer in Philadelphia. A chance meeting with Judge J.T. Bernard of Tallahassee, who was in Philadelphia as a commissioner from Florida to the 1876 Centennial Exposition, may have led to Harper's move to Tallahassee in 1884. Harper was soon advertising that he would take "artistic photographs" in his first studio.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs taken by Alvan S. Harper of various people and locations in Tallahassee, Florida. The images include churches, businesses, and people participating in various activities, as well as a theatrical performance in Tallahassee.  Some of the photographs document United States President McKinley's visit to Tallahassee in 1900, during which people from all over Florida came to Tallahassee to see him. One of these images depicts a Black male on a horse draped with U.S. flags.
