In 2000, the Department of State began planning for a "Museum of Florida Political History and Governance" which would explore the rich political legacy of Florida government on citizens' lives and emphasize the importance of public service and citizen participation. Particular emphasis was placed upon the state's legislative history in order to instill in the public and newly elected officials a sense of the common threads of policy and procedure that were present in the state's early years that remain timely today. As part of the planning and information gathering for this museum, the Division of Historical Resources conducted a series of oral history interviews with former Florida legislators. The museum planners intended for the interviews to become central exhibits.
