Biographical/Historical:     The Jupiter Inlet lighthouse was completed and first lit on July 10, 1860. Built at a cost of more than $60,000 the 115-foot-tall brick tower contained a fixed white light varied by a brighter white flash every 90 seconds. A state-of-the-art first order Fresnel lens produced the light. During the Civil War, Confederates removed the lens to help Confederate blockade runners. In 1886, Captain James A. Armour found the lens buried in nearby Jupiter Creek and reinstalled the light. A year later, Captain Armour brought his new bride to the lonely outpost and enjoyed a record 40-year career as Lightkeeper. A second keeper's dwelling was built at the station in 1883.

The keepers were relieved of rescue duties in 1886 when a lifesaving station was built on the south side of the inlet. A telegraph signal station was added to the lighthouse station in 1898. In 1973, Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Summary:     This collection contains 22 black and white photographs of Jupiter Inlet, taken by an unknown photographer. Images include the Jupiter Inlet Light lighthouse, steamboats, paddleboats, pineapple farms, rubber trees, and Black workers clearing rubber tree plants. Steamers are moored at the Celestial Railroad dock. Four photographs depict the living and eating quarters of a paddleboat.
