Biographical/Historical:     During the 1880s, St. Augustine (St. Johns County) enjoyed an economic boom as northerners escaped the harsh northern winter by heading south for an extended vacation season, and multi-millionaire Henry Flagler transformed St. Augustine into the "American Riviera" by building resort hotels and establishing the Florida East Coast Railway.

At the same time, Palatka (also in St. Johns County) was also experiencing the economic prosperity of the Gilded Age. By 1885, seven steamboat lines operated out of Palatka, including Hubbard Hart's Ocklawaha River Line and the Charleston, Savannah Line of Ocean Steamers. During the 1880s Palatka attracted five new railroad lines and established itself as central Florida's transportation center. On November 7, 1884, a fire destroyed nearly the entire business district. However, brick buildings replaced wood frame structures and Palatka re-emerged once again.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs of various sites in Palatka, St. Augustine, and the Ocklawaha River in Florida during the economic boom of the late 19th century. Photographs of St. Augustine include the site of a former slave market, the St. Augustine Cathedral and the St. Augustine City Gate. Photographs of Palatka include three photographs of the Larkin Hotel.
