Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     The Historic American Buildings Survey, initiated in 1933, is the oldest Federal preservation program, created as a comprehensive effort to document America's historic places. In 1969, it joined with the Historic American Engineering Record, which documents industrial landmarks and bridges. In selecting places for documentation, priority is given to sites of national significance or buildings of architectural significance that are being demolished.

The Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) works cooperatively with state agencies, universities, and historical societies to collect its surveys. The documentation, which includes measured architectural drawings, photographs, and historical reports, is produced in a standard format according to HABS/HAER guidelines. The Library of Congress is the repository for the documentation. The Bureau of Historic Preservation, which is part of the Division of Historic Resources of the Department of State, is the state agency responsible for coordinating the HABS/HAER projects in Florida.

Summary:     This series contains records maintained by the Bureau of Historic Preservation in documenting projects conducted with the Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record. The records include working copies of historical reports, photographs, negatives, floor plans, and architectural drawings. It documents the architectural design of selected historic sites and/or of buildings, residences, and bridges prior to their destruction or renovation in Florida, including the seaplane hangars and erecting shops built from 1907 to 1918 at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Pensacola; and seventy West Palm Beach residences of the Hillcrest neighborhood, built from 1924 to 1941 and representative of domestic architectural style of that period.
