Biographical/Historical:     As the 1968 Florida Constitution stipulated, the Executive Branch consisted of the Governor and six elected Cabinet members--including the Commissioner of Agriculture-- who presided over the various executive boards and departments. While the Governor and each Cabinet member controlled their own departments, they also jointly shared control over several departments: the Departments of General Services, Law Enforcement, Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Natural Resources, Internal Improvement Trust Fund, Revenue and Pardons. Executive Cabinet meetings were held regularly to discuss and administer these departments.
Doyle Conner's service in Florida government began in 1950 when he was elected to Florida's House of Representatives.  During this time, Conner was a sophomore at the University of Florida working towards his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture.  Before completion of his degree, Conner was re-elected for a second term to the House of Representatives. He was first elected Commissioner of Agriculture in 1960, and was re-elected for the next seven elections. He retired in 1990.
Summary:   This series documents Commissioner Doyle Conner's involvement with the Executive Cabinet. It consists primarily of correspondence between the Commissioner and Florida citizens over concerns, issues and the activities of the Executive Cabinet from 1971 through 1985. A large portion of the materials deals with environmental issues, such as land use, environmental policy and sales of land.
