The State Theater Board of Florida was created in 1980 (Ch. 80-288, Laws) as an advisory board for the State Theater Program in the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. Its duties were to develop criteria and formulate policy for state theater programs; to establish priority use of the state theaters; to propose contracts with professional theater management groups; and to propose additional state theaters. The Board was abolished in 1990 (Ch. 83-265, Laws) following a review and recommendations by the Senate Committee on Governmental Operations.
Summary:
This series consists of contracts, audits, program reports, financial reports, and general information relating to the four theaters participating in the State Theater Program: The Asolo Theatre; Caldwell Theatre; Coconut Grove Playhouse; and Hippodrome Theatre. Most of the material relates to fiscal years 1988-89 through 1990-91. However, a small amount of material relates to fiscal years 1986-87 and 1987-88. The contracts are agreements between the Deparment of State and each state theater indicating the amount of funding the theater will receive in return for specified programs and services which the theater is required to carry out.
The annual audits of each theater, prepared by independent auditors, contain financial statements and information regarding their organization, accounting policies, and other finance-related information. The financial reports consist of financial statements similar to those found in the audits.
The program reports describe the performances and activities of each theater during each annual theater season, including touring companies, training of students, shows performed, administration, and other activities.
The general information files contain correspondence, bylaws, and other materials relating to the administration, operations, and finance of each theater.
Also included in the series are agenda for State Theater Board meetings in April 1988 and September 1989, and the report of the Senate Committee on Governmental Operations reviewing the operations of the State Theater Board and recommending its termination.
