The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical: The Office of the Secretary of State was created in 1845 to maintain the State's public records.  In 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws), the Office of Secretary of State became part of the Department of State.  The Secretary of State keeps records of all official acts of the Legislature and the Executive Department.  The Secretary and the Department administer elections, public records, the Great Seal, and the Administrative Code; issue charters to corporations; and manage the state's library services, archives, cultural affairs, museum, and historic resources.  The Secretary is the Chief Cultural Officer and the Chief Protocol Officer of the State.  The post of Secretary of State was one of the elected Cabinet posts until January 3, 2003, the effective date of a 1998 constitutional amendment eliminating the office from the Cabinet and making the department responsible to the governor, with the Secretary of State position a gubernatorial appointment.
Summary:     This series consists primarily of correspondence but also includes some reports, studies related to the following areas: international trade and cultural missions, Florida International Affairs Commission, the Sister City Grant Program, Office of International Affairs, Florida Intergovernmental Relations Foundation, Office of Trade and Economic Development. The series also includes informational publications documenting the many areas of activity and concern to Florida's Secretary of State.  Secretary Harris was the last cabinet grade Secretary of State, and as such her concerns span the entire body of issues addressed by the Florida Cabinet.
