Summary:     In 1856, by an act of the United States Congress, certain lands were given to the State of Florida to be used for developing a railway system throughout the state.  Railroad companies were required to file a copy of a plat showing the proposed route with Florida's Secretary of State.  The earliest railroads documented in the series, from 1853 to 1858, are the Alabama and Florida Railroad, the Florida Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad, the Florida Railway Company, and the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad.  There is a gap in the collection until the late 1870's, with the bulk of the collection following from 1881-1914.  In addition to railroad routes, some maps reflect canal routes too.
