Summary:     The series contains the oaths taken and bonds given for notaries public between 1845 and 1897.  Notaries public were authorized to authenticate written documents under a seal of office and to administer and provide written authorization of oaths.  They could also solemnize the rites of matrimony, take renunciation and relinquishment of dower, and acknowledge deeds and other written documents.  Notaries were local officials who authenticated written legal transactions when travel and communication among state and local officials was limited.  Individuals seeking appointment as a notary had to post a security bond with two or more "good and sufficient sureties" and approved by the county commissioners of the county of residence as well as the state comptroller.  The series contains two forms required to authenticate each individual commission:  one for the Oath of Office and another authenticating the security bond.  It is apparent that there are various gaps in these records, some counties are more complete than others.
