The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) was founded on September 10, 1894, as a single organization to amalgamate the women's organizations created during the Civil War to support the Confederate Army. The numerous local organizations continued after the war, turning their attentions to memorializing Confederate veterans, and most of these were absorbed into two larger organizations around 1890: the Daughters of the Confederacy in Missouri and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Confederate Soldier's Home in Tennessee. These two organizations are now part of the UDC, which claims to be the oldest heritage organization in the United States via their founding dates.
The UDC is a non-profit charity organization concerned primarily with recording and preserving the history of the Confederates and Southern women during the Civil War and erecting monuments to that end, awarding scholarships to Confederate descendants, and promoting benevolence in Southern communities. There are divisions of the UDC in 18 states, including Ohio, California, and the District of Columbia. The Florida Division was formed within a few years of UDC's founding.
Summary:
This collection consists of 12 scrapbooks regarding the history of the Civil War, Southern life, and the history of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Many early entries are written by Confederate veterans recounting their experiences in all Florida theatres of the war, while later entries are recollections by wives, daughters, or other descendants of those living in the Confederate South. Volumes contain entries on such subjects as the Battle of Olustee, Jefferson Davis, home front experiences, copies of correspondence, Southern women's activities, and many others.
Several entries document the perceived experiences of people of color during the war, such as: "A Faithful Servant," the story of Richard, a 17-year-old enslaved man serving Major John W. Tench; "The Mulatto Mustapha," the story of an invading Union Captain in Windsor, South Carolina; and "My Old Black Mammy," the reminiscence of Elizabeth Coffee Sheldon of her enslaved nursemaid, unnamed, in Cherry Lake, Florida. The later volumes contain entries regarding the functions and history of the United Daughters of the Confederacy organization, recorded at the national, division, and chapter levels.
