Biographical/Historical:     Angus Paterson (1834-1905), a native of Scotland, settled with his family in Gadsden County, Florida, around the 1840s. In the 1850s, the family moved to Madison County. Paterson was an attorney and represented Madison County in the Constitutional Convention of 1885. A Freemason, Paterson was a member of Madison Lodge No. 11 from about 1876 until his death in 1905.

Summary:     The collection contains a cash book and papers of Angus Paterson pertaining to his law practice. Also included is a certificate excusing Patterson from military duty in the Confederate Army due to a physical disability, a certificate from the District Courts of the Confederate States, District of Florida admitting him to the practice of law in the Second Circuit of Florida, and an oath of allegiance to the United States taken by Paterson after the close of the Civil War.
