Biographical/Historical:     In 1679, Spanish colonists established Fort San Marcos de Apalache at the convergence of the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers to guard against invasion from the sea. By the time Florida re-entered the Union after the Civil War in 1868, the fort had changed hands five times.

The Spanish occupied the fort from 1679 until 1763, when it was ceded to the British, and again from 1783 to 1821. In 1817, Andrew Jackson commandeered the fort for use as a base for fighting Indians in the First Seminole War. The fort raised the American flag in 1821 when Spain ceded East and West Florida to the United States. At that time, it became defunct as military outpost; however, it retained a military hospital to treat soldiers for yellow fever and malaria. Then, in the Civil War, Confederate soldiers refortified and held the outpost for the duration of battle.

Summary:     The collection includes two plans of the Fort Sam Marcos de Apalache. One is a colored drawing of the fort itself, and the other is a black and white plan of the fort showing the St. Marks and Wakulla River.
