Biographical/Historical:     In 1901, Clement Acton Griscom, a businessman from Philadelphia, established a summer home at Horseshoe Plantation, north of Tallahassee. After his death, the farm was divided four ways to become Luna, Water Oak, Bull Run, and Horseshoe plantations.

Frances C. Griscom, Clement's youngest daughter, inherited Water Oak Plantation. Frances was a champion golfer and a hunting and fishing enthusiast. She operated Water Oak as hunting land and a winter home away from her residence in Philadelphia.

Lloyd Carpenter Griscom, one of Clement's sons, inherited Luna Plantation. Lloyd was a distinguished diplomat serving in the overseas diplomatic corps. He served in France in World War I with General Pershing. He also practiced law, owned the Tallahassee Democrat, and was an author. In addition to the Luna Plantation, he owned property in New York, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. He was first married to Elizabeth Bronson of New York, by whom he had two sons, Frederick and Lloyd Preston. His second wife was Audrey Crosse of England.

Summary:     This collection of Griscom family papers includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents, contracts, wills, deeds, photographs, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, scrapbooks, farm guest books, and memorabilia. The bulk of the materials are the papers of Lloyd Carpenter Griscom, Audrey Crosse Griscom, and Frances C. Griscom. The business records deal primarily with Luna Plantation and Water Oak Plantation.

The correspondence documents exchanges between the Griscom family and several notable persons. Some of the correspondents of Lloyd Carpenter Griscom are General Pershing, 1919; Rudyard Kipling; Henry Adams; Richard Harding Davis; James Bryce; Edward, Duke of Windsor; President Theodore Roosevelt, 1905-1908; and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937-1942. The correspondents of Frances C. Griscom include Mamie Eisenhower, 1970, and President Richard Nixon, 1953-1961. The collection also includes an early nineteenth century letter to an unidentified person that may be President James Monroe.

The collection also contains several photographs of both the Griscom family in Florida and Audrey Crosse Griscom's family in England. Some of the photographs are not labeled.
