Biographical/Historical: ****DEACCESSIONED*****The Society of the Cincinnati was formed on May 13, 1783 as the Revolutionary army prepared to disband.  A hereditary and fraternal organization of commissioned officers, its purpose was to commemorate the ideals of the Revolution and to perpetuate friendship among its members.  It was formed at the suggestion of General Henry Knox.
Summary: ****DEACCESSIONED*****The document is a membership certificate of the Society of the Cincinnati issued to Matthew McConnell, Esquire.  It is dated October 31, 1786 and signed at Mount Vernon, Virginia by George Washington, president of the Society.
