Biographical/Historical:     Vicente Sebastian Pintado was a Spanish cartographer, engineer and land surveyor of Spanish Louisiana and West Florida, operating out of Pensacola. He served as surveyor general of West Florida from 1805 to 1817, taking special note of British fortifications and settlements. In 1815, he was tasked with recovering all Spanish troops and enslaved persons taken by the British. On this mission in April 1815, Pintado was scouting the Prospect Bluff area (later known as Fort Gadsden) on the Apalachicola River, the largest British fortification in the region.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a letter from Vicente Pintado to Don Josef de Soto, dated April 29, 1815. The letter is a report of Pintado's trip to Apalachicola and up the Apalachicola River to the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers. The letter is written in Spanish; an English translation is available.
