Biographical/Historical:     The Jones family came to Florida in 1840, when George Noble Jones of Savannah, Georgia, married Mary Nuttall of Jefferson County. Mary, the widow of William Nuttall, lived on El Destino, a cotton labor farm established by her late husband. She married Jones four years after William's death, and ownership of the labor farm transferred to Jones. Jones also operated both a grist and a sawmill.

In 1865, Jones' labor farms in Florida and Georgia began to lose money; in Georgia, he lost 500 bales of cotton as his property lay in General William T. Sherman's path. Jones took up permanent residence at El Destino, but turned over its management to his son, Wallace Savage Jones.

When Grover Cleveland became president, Wallace Jones applied for and received a foreign appointment. In 1885, he became United States Consul at Messina, Italy, and ten years later, Consul General at Rome. He lived at home and abroad with his sister, Lilla; neither ever married. Upon his death, his nephew George Noble Jones III inherited his estate.

Summary:       The collection contains the personal papers of the Jones family of Savannah, Georgia, and Jefferson County, Florida. It includes personal correspondence, tax receipts, and financial records that reflect the family's interest in the cotton trade.
