Biographical/Historical:     James Bryan Whitfield began his career in 1885 as a newspaper reporter covering the Florida Constitutional Convention. In 1889 he served as a clerk to the Supreme Court, recording by hand the opinions of the court's justices. In 1897 Whitfield became State Treasurer and later served as Florida Attorney General from 1903 to 1904. Governor William Sherman Jennings appointed Whitfield to the Florida Supreme Court in 1904 and he served until his retirement in 1943.
Summary:     This single-item collection contains a portrait of former Florida Supreme Court Justice James Bryan Whitfield, taken after his appointment in 1904.
