Biographical/Historical:     The Crooked River Light Station near Carrabelle began operations in October 1895 after years of difficulty and confusion. This lighthouse replaced an earlier one on Dog Island that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1873. Heavy lumber trade from the Apalachicola River to Crooked River prompted authorities to request funds to build a new lighthouse. Congress allocated $40,000 for this purpose in 1889, but the money was not put to use until five years later due to delays in selecting the new site and errors in the land title.
Summary:     This collection consists of a watch book maintained at the Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle, Florida from October 28, 1895 to December 1897. The keeper or his assistant recorded weather conditions and visibility on a twice-daily basis.
