Biographical/Historical:     Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Pensacola traces its history back to 1559 when Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna Y Arellano established a colony on the shores of Pensacola and celebrated the first Catholic Mass in what is now the United States. However, it wasn't until 1757 when the Spanish constructed the first of several Pensacola churches dedicated to Saint Michael.

The original wooden structure collapsed in 1831 and the congregation built a new one near the original site. During the Civil War, Union soldiers burned the church after allegedly having used it for quartering horses. The congregation rebuilt yet again but another fire caused its destruction during the yellow fever outbreak in 1882. The church bishop laid the cornerstone for the present structure at Palafox and Chase streets in 1885 and formally dedicated the church in 1886. The church lost many of its early records due to fire, plague or storm since its inception.
