	Biographical/Historical:	The parish of St. Augustine dates to September 8, 1565, when Don Pedro de Aviles landed on the shores of what would become the city of St. Augustine. The first mass was celebrated on that day by Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, who became the first pastor. Various encounters with the English resulted in Saint Augustine burning, most notably in 1702, and parish activities were moved from the ruined church to the chapel of la Soledad hospital until 1763, when Florida formally came under British control. Spain regained Florida in 1784, but the city of Saint Augustine and the church were in ruins. In 1793, the construction of a new church building began, which was completed in 1797; it was designated as the cathedral church of the diocese in 1873.
	Summary:	The collection contains a microfilm copy of the records of the Cathedral of St. Augustine from 1594 to 1763. The microfilm reel includes baptisms, marriages, burials, and confirmations. Of particular interest are baptisms and burials of free and enslaved Black persons and "mixed bloods," typically referring to those of indigenous and Spanish descent. Due to the poor condition of many of the pages at the time of microfilming, many of the frames are practically unreadable.
