Pasco County was established in 1887 by an act of the State Legislature. It was formed from the southern portion of Hernando County. The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, military, and probate records.
Summary:
This series consists of the military discharge records of Pasco County, Florida, from 1917 to 1967. The documents include the General Index to Soldiers and Sailors Discharges (ca. 1917-1967) and Soldier and Sailors Discharge records (1919-1967). Each county in the United States was required to record the honorable discharge of soldiers and sailors who served in World War I. The records are usually typed or handwritten copies of the original documents which were given to the soldiers. The records contain the individual's name, race, rank, series number, reason for discharge, birthplace, age at time of enlistment, occupation, and physical description. The enlistment record, usually included with the discharge record, records the length of service, prior service, marital status, arms and horsemanship qualifications, advancement, battles, decorations and honors, leaves of absence, physical condition, and character evaluation.
The General Index is arranged alphabetically only by the first letter of the last name; within each letter, the names are arranged by the book in which the discharge is recorded (which are arranged roughly chronologically by filing date). It indexes volumes 1-9 and lists each soldier's name, address, and branch. Because the records are arranged by filing date and not by discharge date, the General Index should be consulted unless the exact filing date is known.
