Clay County was created by an act (Ch. 866, Laws) of the State Legislature December 31, 1858. Originally part of Duval County, Clay annexed a portion of Putnam County in 1883 (Ch.3469, Laws). The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:
This series consists of a microfilm copy of the soldier and sailor discharge records of Clay County, Florida, circa 1917 to 1944. Each county in the United States was required to record the honorable discharge of soldiers and sailors who served in World War I. The records are usually typed or handwritten transcripts of the original document given to the soldier. The records contain the individual's name, race, rank, series number, reason for discharge, birthplace, age at time of enlistment, occupation, and physical description. The enlistment record, usually included with the discharge record, gives the length of service, prior service, marital status, arms and horsemanship qualifications, advancement, battles, decorations and honors, leaves of absence, physical condition, and character evaluation. The discharges are loose and arranged in bundles by the first letter of the last name of the soldier; for each letter, there is a separate index preceding the bundle of discharges.
