Biographical/Historical:     Clay County was created by an act (Ch. 866, Laws) of the State Legislature December 31, 1858.  Originally part of Duval County, Clay annexed a portion of Putnam County in 1883 (Ch.3469, Laws). The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the chancery orders of Clay County, Florida, from 1885 to 1925.  Chancery or equity are terms used to describe court proceedings pertaining to impartial justice between two parties which claim conflict.  In chancery cases a person seeks to compel someone to do something or to stop or refrain from doing something.  Chancery courts handle divorces, foreclosures of liens, receiverships, partitions, trusts, real property controversies, etc.  This series consists of orders handed down by the chancery court.  Most of the orders pertain to divorces or foreclosures. The order books are indexed.
