Biographical/Historical:     Lake County was created by an act of the State Legislature on May 7, 1887 (Chap. 3771, Laws).  It was formed from portions of Sumter and Orange Counties.  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the death records of Lake County, Florida from 1915 to 1974.  The series contains coroner's inquests, reports and some death certificates (1915-1974) also known as death reports and an index (1915-1974).
    Death records, coroner's reports and inquests were prepared by the coroner of the county when a person died.  These records include the name of deceased, age, sex, weight, time and cause of death.  A death certificate may be included as well.  When some one died unattended, or not under the care of a doctor at the time of death, a coroner performed an inquest.  The inquest required a summons for a jury, testimony from witnesses and a ruling on the cause of death.  The  findings of the inquest may also accompany the records.
