Biographical/Historical:     Lee County was created by an act of the State Legislature on May 13, 1887 (Ch. 3769, Laws).  It was formed from the northern part of Monroe County.  In 1923, Hendry County was formed from the northeast section of Lee (Ch. 9360, Laws), and Collier County was formed from the southern portion of the county (Ch. 9362, Laws).  The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of a microfilm copy of the marriage records of Lee County, Florida, from 1887 to 1951.  It contains seven books of marriage records.  The marriage record books are therecorded and bound copies of marriage licenses issued.  They document when a couple applied for the marriage license, when they were married, and who performed the ceremony.  Each marriage record book contains an index.
    Marriage Record Book 1 also contains county court records (1897-1903) primarily concerning cases of indebtedness or damages suits.  Each entry records the names of the plaintiff and defendant; the amount of the suit; and any previous actions taken on the case (summons, writs, bonds, etc. issued).  The order of the judge is documented as well as the court costs involved.  The court records are not indexed.
